No one is completely sure why the plane crashed but there are several theories. Some blame it on icing damaging the plane’s structure; others say that the thrusters were not working correctly. Based on what I have read and heard, the fuel mishap seems to be the most common theory.

Originally utilized as a cargo aircraft, the US Navy was routinely flying over Iceland during the 1970s as a part of its unilateral defense agreement with the country.
