Clarinet Concerto No. 1 in F minor, Op. 73 (1811)

1. Allegro moderato (0:00)
2. Adagio ma non troppo (7:45)
3. Rondo. Allegretto (Allegro) (13:37)

Walter Boeykens, clarinet and the Rotterdam Philharmonic conducted by James Conlon

Description by James Leonard
Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826) composed his Clarinet Concerto No. 1 in F minor, Op. 73, in 1811 after his Concertino for Clarinet and Orchester in E flat major, Op. 26, and before his Clarinet Concerto No. 2 in E flat major, Op. 74. All three works were written for and dedicated to the clarinetist Heinrich Joseph Baermann, and all three show a complete understanding of the capabilities of the instrument. Weber's Clarinet Concerto No. 1 is distinctly different from the earlier concertino: where the earlier work is lightly playful and lyrically expressive, the Concerto No. 1 is deeply serious and dramatically, almost operatically, expressive. The concerto is in three movements: a forceful opening Allegro, an intensely expressive central Adagio, and an energetic closing Rondo Allegretto. Weber is clearly a master of the Romantic orchestra, and his writing for the soloists is supremely skillful throughout.

Demonstration of a Baroque Clarinet and Chalumeau.

**New album out soon! Support my crowdfunding campaign here** http://[a]www.boxwoodandbrass.co.uk%2Fsupport-1%23%2Fbeethoven-transformed-support[/a]

Baroque clarinet: Steven Fox after J. G. Zencker, 1740–50. The clarinet is made of stained boxwood with two brass keys.
This is the kind of clarinet that Molter's concertos would have been written for, and for which Telemann wrote.

Soprano Chalumeau: Brian Ackerman, 1990s. Boxwood with two brass keys. The chalumeau is another ancestor of the modern clarinet, which was in use in the early 18th century.

In the wind concertos, for bassoon, horn (four completed works), flute, flute and harp, oboe and, above all, clarinet, Mozart shows a deep understanding of each instrument’s character and technique.

Most of Mozart’s Wind Concertos can best be described as occasional pieces, composed on commissions from professional and amateur players, often with the express purpose of providing income for their composer and satisfying a particular trait, taste or talent of the recipient. In this respect they are very different from the Piano and Violin Concertos. The major exception is the late Clarinet Concerto (K622) written for Mozart’s fellow freemason and friend, Anton Stadler. Stadler was to have a great influence on Mozart’s writing for the clarinet, including the notable solos for the instrument in the final Italian opera La Clemenza di Tito. This Concerto, together with the companion Clarinet Quintet (K581) stands as one of Mozart’s undisputed masterpieces. That being said, the earlier Concertos all have something individual to say for themselves and occasionally reach considerable peaks of inspiration. Hardly the most obvious of instruments for a solo Concerto, Mozart’s first Wind Concerto is nevertheless written for the Bassoon. The grumbling, growling giant can, however, be an affectionate and witty instrument and that is how Mozart obviously sees it. It is significant too, that despite his less than conventional choice of solo player, the Concerto has something about it that shows the piece is throughout conceived only for the Bassoon with its own very definite characteristics. This is Mozart’s only Concerto for the instrument and it was composed in Salzburg in 1774 for the composer’s friend and amateur player of the bassoon and the piano, Thaddaeus von Duernitz. Mozart did later write a bassoon sonata for his friend as well as several piano pieces including three of his Concertos. The work is in the three conventional movements for a Concerto of the time (Fast – Slow – Fast) and generally light hearted and playful in the opening Allegro and final French styled Rondo, with lots of leaps and jumps and runs for the soloist and sweet singing tones evident in the central Andante.

Trio for clarinet, cello and piano Op. 114 (1891), Johannes Brahms (1833-1897).

Juan Enric Lluna, clarinet
Lluis Claret, cello
Josep Colom, piano

I. Allegro (00:00)
II. Adagio (7:30)
III. Andantino grazioso (14:51)
IV. Allegro (19:18)

The Clarinet Trio in A minor, Op. 114 is one of four chamber works composed by Johannes Brahms featuring the clarinet as a primary instrument. It was written in the summer of 1891 for the clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld, and is considered by scholars as part of a rebirth for the composer who in 1890 declared his String Quintet in G Major to be his final work.

The work calls for clarinet, piano, and cello, and is one of the very few in that genre to have entered the standard repertoire. It was written for Clarinet in A, which can also be substituted by viola.

The overall mood of the piece is somber but includes both romantic and introspective qualities. Music historians and scholars have admitted that the trio is "not among the most interesting of his compositions"[1] The work incorporates a considerable amount of arpeggio patterns in its theme, complimented by conversation like passages in the upper register of the cello.[1] Perhaps due to this lack of interesting material, Op. 114 has been overshadowed by another one of Brahms' chamber works written for Mühlfeld- the Clarinet Quintet in B minor, Op.115.

However, it is very clear in the music that Brahms absolutely adored the playing of Richard Mühlfeld, and that this adoration made its way into the trio. Eusebius Mandyczewski, a scholar and friend of Brahms, wrote of the trio that "It is as though the instruments were in love with each other."

Composed by Ramin Djawadi in 2011, the main title theme for the HBO fantasy television show Game of Thrones was so iconic that it was later reused for the opening titles of the prequel series House of the Dragon. Djawadi focused on cello as the main instrument for the theme, feeling that flute and violin were overused in fantasy music.
