As a US warship heads to the Black Sea via the Dardanelles Straits – according to Turkish media – NATO’s war of words with Russia has intensified.<br /><br />General Secretary Anders Fogh Rasmussen, on a visit to Prague, accused Russia of stirring up ethnic tensions in eastern Ukraine and said that it was down to Moscow to deescalate the situation.<br /><br />“As I speak, some 40,000 Russian troops are massed along Ukraine’s borders – not training but ready for combat,” he told a news conference.<br /><br />“If Russia is serious about a dialogue, the first step should be to pull back its troops.”<br /><br />Rasmussen stressed that the alliance was not discussing military options, and the way forward was through diplomacy.<br /><br />But he warned that any further military action by Russia would lead to grave consequences and severe economic sanctions.<br /><br />Amid this increasingly tense Cold War style stand-off over Russia’s annexation of Crimea, the foreign ministry in Moscow has hit back.<br /><br />It claims NATO is using the crisis to boost its appeal to members and to justify its existence by rallying them against an imaginary threat.<br /><br />The ministry said Rasmussen’s remarks were confrontational and that in recent months he had not offered “any constructive agenda” for Ukraine, adding that it was adding to instability in the region.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday accused NATO of interfering in Ukrainian affairs, saying he did not understand why it felt it had the right to comment on Kiev's handling of mass street protests. Duration: 00:36

NATO says it has suspended practical cooperation with Russia.<br /><br />The announcement was made at a formal meeting with Russia's envoy to the military pact.<br /><br />Rory Challands reports from Moscow.

The head of NATO has called on Russia to stop supporting separatists in Ukraine and to work to find a political solution to the conflict.<br /><br />General Anders Rasmussen spoke after meeting with the Polish foreign and defence ministers in Warsaw.<br /><br />“Russia has been escalating this crisis from the start. Russia should live up to its international commitments and stop supporting separatists and pull back its troops from the Ukrainian border, so political solutions can be found to this great crisis,” General Rasmussen said.<br /><br />Earlier Russian president Putin said he had pulled back his forces from the Ukrainian border; NATO said it had seen no evidence of this.<br /><br />Meanwhile NATO has been bringing in troops to southern Poland. American, Canadian and Polish paratroopers took part in a show of strength with military exercises on Wednesday.<br /><br />NATO said it would take any steps needed to “increase the security” of its allies in central and eastern Europe.
